BORN BRADFORD 28/07/1888. SON OF FRED COUPLAND (1863-1947) & ELIZABETH BARTHOLEMEW (1861-1936), AT 13, & 85 , CRAVEN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) SON OF A BOOTMAKER. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN, THREE OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. EDUCATED AT BUCKINGHAM STREET COUNCIL SCHOOL, HULL. HIS FAMILY WERE LIVING AT 85, CRAVEN STREET, HULL, BY 1911. SINGLE MAN. A MATTRESS MAKER AND EX RECKITTS’ WORKER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 09/06/1915. JOINED THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, 3RD NORTHUMBERLAND FIELD AMBULANCE. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE IN JULY 1916, AND WAS ATTACHED TO THE 317TH ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 17/10/1917, HELPING THE WOUNDED. AGED 29. BURIED AT ST JULIEN. HIS MAJOR WROTE, ” HE WAS A VERY GALLANT FELLOW, ALWAYS CHEERFUL AND BRAVE.” UNMARRIED. HE LEFT £89 IN HIS WILL TO HIS FATHER, FRED, AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. HE LEFT BROTHERS, CHARLES HARRISON, ERNEST STANLEY, LOUIS BERTRAM, AND SISTER, ANN ELIZABETH COUPLAND.
HE IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUGVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 3, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HE IS BURIED AT ST. JULIEN DRESSING STATION CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE GAVE HIS LIFE, HIS ALL”.
