BORN HULL 1899. SON OF WILLIAM & CHARLOTTE E. COX – 5 POPLAR GROVE, NORNABEL STREET (1911 CENSUS). LOST BY ENEMY ACTION ON 17/05/1917, AGED 18. HIS DEATH IS RECORDED ON THE TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, LONDON. HE IS LISTED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS AND RECORDED ON THE TRINITY HOUSE SCHOOL MEMORIAL.
SS Lewisham, built by W. Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by Watts, Watts & Co., London, was a British steamer of 2810 tons.
On May 17th, 1917, Lewisham, on a voyage from Halifax to Le Havre with a cargo of wheat, was sunk by the German submarine U-46 (Leo Hillebrand), west of Ireland. 24 persons were lost.
