Coyne, Charles William

BORN HULL 1895. SON OF CHARLES WILLIAM COYNE  (1869-1907) & ANNIE JACKSON, OF 42, CHARLOTTE STREET, HULL,  8, IVY GROVE, RUGBY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 8, MINNIES TERRACE, ROSAMOND STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF CHARLIE COYNE, THE LATE HULL KINGSTON ROVERS RUGBY PLAYER. HIS BROTHERS FRED & TOM ALSO SERVED IN FRANCE.

CHARLES WILLIAM COYNE, WORKED FOR MR TAYLOR OF HULL AS A SIGNWRITER AND DECORATOR. HE ENLISTED IN THE EAST RIDING ENGINEERS (TERRIRORIALS), ON 20/03/1910.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS SAPPER, 465, EAST RIDING ROYAL ENGINEERS. HE WENT TO FRANCE IN AUGUST 1915, WITH HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, TOM COYNE, WHO SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND HAD BEEN WOUNDED TWICE, WHILE AGED 18.

SAPPER, CHARLES COYNE, WAS WOUNDED DURING THE SOMME OFFENSIVE. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 09/08/1916, AGED 21.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 09/08/1917, ON 09/08/1918 & AGAIN ON 11/08/1919. HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE DIED FOR KING & COUNTRY GOD’S WILL BE DONE.”

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE EAST RIDING ROYAL ENGINEERS MEMORIAL, AT HULL MINSTER.
