BORN HULL 1882. YOUNGEST SON OF JOHN CRABB AND THERESEA THOMPSON (1854-1925), OF HULL. A DOCK SIDE LABOURER (1911 CENSUS) AND WAS WORKING AS A BOOKSELLER WHEN HE ENLISTED.
HUSBAND TO MARY JANE AITCHISON (1866-1960), AT 6 EUGENIE TERRACE, KENT STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS). THIER DAUGHTER, HARRIET WAS BORN ON 19/11/1909. THEIR SON JOHN ROBERT CRABB, WAS BORN ON 07/01/1914, BUT DIED OF PNEUMONIA, ON 26/03/1915.
PRIVATE, JOHN CRABB WAS A FORMER SOLDIER WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE ENLISTED IN 1900, SERVED AS PRIVATE, 6525, IN SOUTH AFRICA. HIS ARMY RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 124 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR, AND GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE WORKED AS A DOCKSIDE LABOURER WHEN HE LEFT THE ARMY.
HE RE-ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 22/10/1914, AGED 32 YEARS AND 320 DAYS. HE DIED OF PNEUMONIA, ON 24/11/1914, AT LEIGHTON BUZZARD HOSPITAL, BEDFORDSHIRE. AGED 32. HE HAD SERVED ONLY 35 DAYS, 15 DAYS OF WHICH WERE SPENT IN HOSPITAL. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MARY.
HE IS BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “LOVE’S LAST GIFT-REMEMBRANCE FROM LOVING WIFE AND DAUGHTER”
HE ALSO LEFT OLDER BROTHERS, JAMES AMBLER CRABB, AT BLUE BELL ENTRY, HIGH STREET, AND GEORGE HEARY CRABB AND SISTER, MARY JANE JEFFREY, WHO BOTH LIVED AT 96 WATERLOO STREET, HULL.
