BORN HULL 1883. SON OF GEORGE WILLIAM DAVIES (1851-1894) & ANN ESTER WALLACE (1848-1914), OF 27 , DAGGER LANE, HULL AND 30 LUMNAN BUILDINGS, OSBORNE STREET, HULL. PREVIOUS TO THE WAR HE WAS A HAIRDRESSER.
HE ENLISTED INTO THE HULL PALS, on 14/09/1914. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. DIED OF FLU ON 20/04/1916, AGED 32. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/04/1916. *
HE IS BURIED AT STE. MARIE CEMETERY, LE HAVRE, SEINE-MARITIME, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHTS FROM SORROWING BROTHERS AND SISTERS”

PRIVATE ALFRED WILLIAM DAVIES 12/56. Born in 1883, Alfred was the third of five children to George and Ann Davies of 27 Dagger Lane, Hull. He had certainly led a varied life. A House Painter by trade on the 1901 Census yet a Hairdresser by 1914. In between times he managed to father a child with one Gertrude Wray and a court record exists as she seeks Maintenance of three shillings a week from a clearly reluctant Alfred. There was one duty he did not seek to shrink from though, and he enlisted at City Hall on 14th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. Alfred was withdrawn from the line with breathing problems on 10th April 1916 and taken first to 4th Casualty Clearing Station and then to 2nd General Hospital, Le Havre where he died of broncho-pneumonia at 9.15 in the morning on 20th April. He is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery; he was 32 years old.
