BORN HULL 1890. SON OF MICHAEL (1862-1947) & LOUISA DEVANEY (1864-1912), OF 10, BENJAMIN TERRACE, DALTON STREET, HULL. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN AND THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN THE WAR. BEFORE ENLISTING HE WAS EMPLOYED BY MESSRS. CHAMBERS & FARGUS, OXFORD STREET, HULL.
HE SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WAS KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SOMME, AGED 25.
HE LEFT A WIDOW, LILY ELIZABETH AND SON, THOMAS EDWARD (BORN 11/2/1915), AT 4, GEORGE TERRACE, ST MARK STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SHE MARRIED PRIVATE, J.W. BONE, 12573, EYR, ON 29TH JULY 1017.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH MAY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
ANOTHER BROTHER,PRIVATE, ARTHUR DEVANEY WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON THE 8TH AUGUST 1916. TWO MORE SERVED AND JOHN WAS REPORTED MISSING. JOHN, WILLIAM & EDWARD DEVANEY LIVED AT 5 WARE’S BUILDING, UPPER UNION STREET, HULL.
