BORN HULL 1892. SON OF SAMUEL HENRY FOOT (1855-1926) & “NELLIE” – ELIZABETH ELLEN COLLINS (1862-1942), OF 23 RUGBY STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HIS SISTER MRS HALL LIVED AT DEE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL. A FISHERMAN BY TRADE.
HE MARRIED 03/07/1915. HIS WIFE, ALICE MAY SYLVESTER (1893-1966) AND DAUGHTER, MURIEL, LIVED AT 6, MYRTLE GROVE, SOMERSET STREET, HULL (CWGC NAVAL ADDRESS).
WILLAM FOOTE, SERVED IN THE MERCHANT NAVY, AS A DECK HAND ON HULL STEAM TRAWLER “WINDWARD HO”. HE WAS LOST AT SEA, ON 09/05/1917, AGED 25., WHEN THE SHIP WAS MINED. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON. ALSO RECORDED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 31ST MAY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
The fishing vessel, WINDWARD HO (H 692) was a British registered steam trawler of 226grt. On the 9th May 1917, when 3 miles S from Peterhead, she was mined and sunk by German submarine UC-40 (Alfred Arnold). 8 lives lost including Skipper.
