BORN BEVERLEY 1894. SON OF JAMES WILLIAM & ELIZABETH GLEADHILL, OF THIS CWGC ADDRESS. ONE OF SIX SONS, FIVE OF WHICH SERVED IN THE ARMY DURING THE WAR. A MILK MAN. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 1ST KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 03/10/1918, AGED 24.
HE IS BURIED AT GUIZANCOURT FARM CEMETERY, GOUY.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, LEONARD EDWARD GLEADHILL, SERVED WITH THE 19TH MANCHESTER REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 23/07/1916, AGED 20.
James Alfred was born in Beverley on 5 September 1894. His father was James Henry Gleadhill who was a chalk pit labourer; his mother was Elizabeth Gleadhill (nee Hardy). James Alfred was one of six sons, only one of which, Robert Edgar, did not serve in the army in the war.
He served in the 1st Battalion of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Private James Alfred Gleadhill, aged 24, was killed in action on 3 October 1918, five weeks before the end of the war. He is remembered today on the Hengate War memorial and on the East Riding memorial in the Minster and is recorded as “J.A.Gledhill.
