Goodill, George

BORN HULL 1896. ELDEST SON OF THOMAS & ELIZABETH MESTERMAN GOODILL OF 2, JUBILEE AVENUE, HARROW STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY COAL TEAMER. ONE OF THREE CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A MESSENGER FOR THE GENERAL POST OFFICE FROM THE AGE OF 14 AND WAS A HULL POSTMAN WHEN WAR BEGAN.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL COMMERCIALS. SERVED WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. IN 1915, HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT ARM, BY A PIECE OF SHRAPNEL. RETURNED TO THE FRONT. HE DIED OF HEAD WOUNDS, ON 23/10/1918, AGED 23.

THIS WAS HIS 1918 ABSENT VOTERS ADDRESS. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER THOMAS. HE LEFT SIBLINGS, EDITH AND SYDNEY. HE IS BURIED IN FRANCE, AT ST. SOUPLET BRITISH CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT”

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ST MARY’S CHURCH MEMORIAL, LOWGATE, HULL.

HIS YOUNGESET BROTHER, PRIVATE, SYDNEY GOODILL, WAS GASSED IN THE WAR.
