BORN HULL 10/07/1888. SON OF EDWARD GOULD & MARY ANN COWLAND, OF 3, HEMBOROUGH BUILDINGS, NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL, 4, CHRISTOPHER STREET, HULL AND 52, ALICIA STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HIS FATHER DIED IN 1909.
JOHN JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY. LOST AT SEA ON 01/11/1914, AGED 28, SERVING AS A STOKER ON HMS ‘GOOD HOPE. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL. JOHN GOULD, ROYAL NAVY, IS RECORDED ON THE ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
HE IS ALSO RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S, NEW GEORGE STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 03 November 1917).
HIS BROTHER, FREDERICK GOULD SERVED IN FRANCE. HIS BROTHER , PTE, EDWARD GOULD, 11/1164, 11TH EYR, WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL AND WAS KILLED IN FRANCE ON 12/04/1918.
The Battle of Coronel HMS Good Hope and HMS Monmouth were sunk by the German fleet (Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee), superior in both shell range and speed. Armoured cruisers Gneisenau and Sharnhorst lead the main attacks in the Battle of Coronel, on 1 November 1914, off the Chilean coast. Monmouth was hit by Gneisenau and was on fire. Nurnberg found her burning and after refusing to surrender, Nurnberg finished her off with 75 shells. All hands on both cruisers HMS Good Hope (900) and HMS Monmouth (678) were lost.
