BORN HULL 1892. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY GREEN & MARY ANN GREEN, OF 3 CLAREMONT AVENUE, FIELD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 13/11/1915. SERVED IN THE 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. QUALIFIED AS A BOMBER. ARRIVED FRANCE 11/6/1916. KILLED IN ACTION EXACTLY ONE YEAR LATER ON 13/11/16. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM 24/11/1917. HE LEFT A BROTHER JAMES & FOUR ELDER SISTERS.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WILLIAM GREEN 22508. Born in 1891, William was one of six children to William and Mary Green of 3 Claremont Avenue, Field Street, Hull. A Labourer by trade he enlisted on 13th November 1915 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals, after his arrival in France on 11th June 1916. William’s war was a short one. He was killed in action on the Somme opposite Serre on 13th November 1916 a year to the day since he literally signed away his life. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 25 years old.
