Greening, Alfred Collin

BORN HULL 1888. SON OF WILLIAM EDWARD GREENING & LOUISA GREENING AT THIS CWGC ADDRESS. HE WAS A FISHERMAN, LIKE HIS FATHER. SERVED AS A SPAREHAND ON THE STEAM TRAWLER ‘SAPHIRE’. LOST AT SEA ON 28/02/1915, AGED 27. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
The Hull steam trawler SAPPHIRE was on passage from Iceland to Hull and lost to the German SMS KOLBERG’s minefield laid off Scarborough on 16th December 1914. The German war ship laid 100 mines between Scarborough & Filey. Despite extensive mine sweeping operations the trawler found a mine that had been missed and was blown up off Filey Brigg on 01/03/1915. She sank with the loss of one of her crew. This was:
