Harmer, William Ernest

BORN HULL 1893. SON OF WILLIAM HARMER & LOUISE WOOTON, OF HULL. HIS FATHER DIED IN 1905 AND HIS MOTHER IN 1907. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN, THREE SISTERS AND A BROTHER CALLED ROBERT. THEY LIVED WITH THEIR AUNT AND UNCLE HARRIET ANN RUTTER AND JASPER RUTTER, AT 80, EDGAR STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). WORKED AS A NORTHEASTERN RAILWAY PORTER AND CHAIN LAD.

HE ENLISTED HULL IN THE RAILWAY PALS – 17TH NFUS, ON 15/09/1914. DESCRIBED AS 6 FOOT TALL, 120 LBS, 36 INCH CHEST, GREY EYES, DARK COMPLEXION, DARK BROWN HAIR AND ‘GOOD’ CHARACTER. DIED OF TUBERCULOSIS, CONTACTED WHILE SLEEPING IN A DAMP SHED DURING TRAINING AT EASINGTON. DISCHARGED AS PERMANENTLY UNFIT. BURIED IN HULL SPRING BANK CEMETERY.
