SENT TO FRANCE 13/07/1915. KILLED IN ACTION AT YPRES, 22/09/1917, AGED 29. HE MARRIED ON 06/05/1915. HIS WIFE LILY TUTE LIVED AT 3 WELLESLEY TERRACE, HESSLE ROAD AND THIS ADDRESS. AN OFFICER WROTE: “YOUR HUSBAND WAS AN ABSOLUTELY FEARLESS SOLDIER RESPECTED BY EVERYONE IN THE BATTALION, AND HIS EXAMPLE DID MUCH TO HOLD OUR BOYS TOGETHER. HE WAS AN EXCEPTIONALLY BRAVE MAN AND AND DIED DOING HIS DUTY, AS HE WOULD HAVE WISHED. HE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY ALL THE NCO’S, OFFICERS AND MEN AS ONE OF THE BRAVEST.”
