BORN HULL 1887. ELDEST SON OF JOSEPH & HANNAH HILL, OF 113 EDINBURGH STREET, HULL.
HIS WIFE BEATRICE LIVED AT 266 , ST GEORGES ROAD, HULL AND 2 FRANKLIN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WORKED FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS (NER) AND HELD THE POSITION OF FREIGHT SHUNTER AT HULL WEST. HIS FATHER BEING AN NER ENGINE DRIVER AT HULL.
HE HAD SERVED IN THE 1ST NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS FOR THREE YEARS AND HAD BEEN IN THE RESERVES FOR EIGHT YEARS WHEN HE WAS RECALLED IN AUGUST 1914. HE HAD BEEN IN THE FIRING LINE SINCE SEPTEMBER, 1914. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 16/06/1915, AGED 27.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING AT YPRES.
HE IS ALSO LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS BROTHER, ROWLAND HILL, WAS LOST ON HMS BULWARK. ANOTHER BROTHER SERVED WITH THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS AND WAS WOUNDED.
