BORN HULL 13/04/1871. ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE LOST AT SEA ON 22/10/1915. HIS WIDOW, HARRIET HODGSON, LIVED AT 4 HERBERTS TERRACE, WASSAND STREET, HULL. HIS PARENTS LIVED 8 SCARBOROUGH STREET, HULL. THEY LOST THREE SONS IN THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, SAPPER, BILLY HODGSON, ROYAL ENGINEERS ALSO DIED IN 1915.

JAMES SERVED AS A DECKHAND. THE TRAWLER ‘SCOTT’ WAS SUNK BY A MINE IN THE THAMES ESTUARY. HE LEFT A WIFE AND THREE CHILDREN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 9TH NOVEMBER 1915, AND IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 13TH NOVEMBER 1915. *
TO ADD TO THE TRAGEDY, HIS WIFE HARRIET, ALSO LOST HER BROTHER, CHIEF ENGINEER, JAMES HEPWORTH AND HIS STEP SON CHARLES BAILEY, ON THE SAME SHIP. THEY LIVED AT 1 IVY VILLAS, SELBY STREET. SHE THEREFORE LOST THREE MEN FROM HER FAMILY, ON THE SAME DAY. THE REST OF THE CREW WERE SAVED.

HMT Scott, built by Cochrane & Sons Ltd, Selby in 1913 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 288 tons.
On October 22nd, 1915, HMT Scott was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-1 (Egon von Werner), off the Tongue lightvessel. 3 persons were lost.
