Hodgson, John

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF JOHN HENRY HODGSON (1866-1931) & CLARA FANNY MARRISON (1868-1935), OF 139, DE GREY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS. AN ASSISTANT BOOT REPAIRER. HE WORKED FOR MESSRS HUDSON, SMITH & CO, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 02/09/1914. TRAINED WITH THE ‘HULL COMMERCIALS’, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, BUT WAS SENT TO HOSPITAL BEFORE THEY EMBARKED TO EGYPT. HE WAS IN HOSPITAL FOR OVER NINE MONTHS. DIED OF SICKNESS, ON 09/09/1916, AGED 22. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 10TH JANUARY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
ON THE 8TH JANUARY, THE MILITARY AUTHORITIES EVIDENTLY UNAWARE OF HIS DEATH SENT AN ESCORT TO HIS HOME ADDRESS, WHEN JOHN HAD BEEN BURIED IN HULL THREE MONTHS PREVIOUSLY.

HIS BROTHER, SAMUEL BLAKE HODGSON, SERVED IN THE ROYAL ENGINEERS.
