BORN HULL 1880. SON OF ROBERT W. HODGSON AND LOUISA HODGSON, OF 3, HOWE STREET, GROVES, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). STEP SON OF HANNAH E BRIDLE, OF 41 , MASSEY STREET, HULL. SON OF A COAL PORTER. HE HAD TWO ELDER BROTHERS, A YOUNGER BROTHER, ROBERT  AND THREE YOUNGER SISTERS.

HE WORKED AS A DOCK SIDE LABOURER (1911 CENSUS). HIS ARMY RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIS AS 5 FOOT, 3.5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCH CHEST, 134 LBS WEIGHT, GREY EYES, BROWN HAIR, TATTOOS, ON BOTH ARMS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 10/10/1914. . JOINED AS GUNNER, 40342, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DISCHARGED ON 20/01/1915, AFTER 103 DAYS SERVICE. HE RE-ENLISTED. SERVED IN THE 10TH YORKSHIRE HUSSARS. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 14/10/1915. KILLED ON 01/07/1916, THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
