Howlett, Sydney

BORN HULL 1899.  SON OF MR THOMAS & JANE HOWLETT, OF 82, BRIDLINGTON STREET, HULL AND GARDEN VILLAGE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 31/10/1914. SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE 150TH ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DIED OF WOUNDS ON, 13/04/1918, AGED 19. HE IS BURIED AT WIMEREUX CEMETERY, FRANCE.

HIS BROTHER HAROLD HOWLETT, EAST YORKHIRE REGIMENT WAS ALSO KILLED IN 1918 AGED 21. HAROLD  WORKED FOR MR ELLIS, BOOT REPAIRER, BEVERLEY ROAD. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, 84613 IN THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WAS CAPTURED IN MAY 1918 AND DIED AS PRISONER OF WAR, ON 15/07/1918, AT RETHEL, AGED 21. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE CLIFTON STREET SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR. CWGC ADDRESS. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 18TH JULY 1919.  HE IS BURIED AT RETHEL FRENCH NATIONAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “TO MEMORY EVER DEAR”
