BORN HULL 1888. SON OF ELI HUNTER (1852-1902) & RACHAEL ANN SONLEY (1856-1934), OF 8, KINGSTON VILLAS, ESTCOURT STREET, HULL. THE SIXTH OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HIS FATHER DIED WHEN HE WAS 14 YERS OLD AND HIS MOTHER RAN AT PIE SHOP AT 79, CUMBERLAND STREET, HULL
HERBERT MARRIED MAUD SHOSUN (1888-1930) AT HULL, IN 1910. LIVING AT 374, BOWLBY’S ROW, STONEFERRY, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 28, CHURCH STREET, DRYPOOL, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WORKED AS LEAD OIL EXTRACTOR AND AN OIL SEED CONTRACTOR. THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN, HERBERT AND BERTHA (1912-2002).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. ORIGINALLY SERVING AS PRIVATE, 25692, IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 44153, TO THE 24TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS (ALSO KNOWN AS THE 1ST TYNESIDE IRISH BATTALION). HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 09/04/1917, AGED 29, AND IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, IN FRANCE.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MAUD, WHO MOVED TO 28 CHURCH STREET, DRYPOOL, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 29 SHILLINGS AND 11 PENCE FOR HERSELF AND TWO CHILDREN, ON 10/12/1917. SHE LATER RE-MARRIED, – HENRY LAWRENCE DYER, AT HULL, IN 1918.

(The eight volumes of Ireland’s Memorial Records were created to preserve and commemorate the memory of the thousands of Irishmen who died during the war.
