SERVED AS SECOND ENGINEER IN THE MERCHANT NAVY. LOST AT SEA ON THE STEAM TRAWLER “HALCYON”, AGED 18.
HE IS LISTED ON ST JOHNS THE BAPTIST CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 21ST APRIL 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
The steam Trawler, Halcyon, was built by Cochrane & Cooper, Ltd., Beverley in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by J. Leyman Jr. was a British trawler of 190 tons.
On February 19th, 1917, Halcyon was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-71 (Hugo Schmidt), off Butt of Lewis. 11 persons were lost.
