BORN HULL 30/03/1899. FOURTH SON OF JOHN & SARAH ALBERTA JOHNSON, OF 11 TALBOT TERRACE, TOOGOODE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), 12, LOCKWOOD STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND LATER 12 BEAUMONT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A TAILOR. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. WORKED AS A MILLER’S ASSISTANT.
EDUCATED AT CHARTERHOUSE LANE SCHOOL. WAS A MILLER’S ASSISTANT. DESCRIBED IN HIS ARMY RECORDS AS FIVE FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 124 LBS, 35.5 INCH CHEST, PROTESTANT RELIGION. ENLISTED IN THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY, ON 27/01/1917. SERVED IN FRANCE. WOUNDED AND CAPTURED ON 11/04/1918. HIS LEG HAD TO BE AMPUTATED AT THE HIP DUE TO BLOOD POISONING. DIED A PRISONER OF WAR IN COLOGNE, ON 17/07/1918, AT 4.45AM, AGED 19. BURIED AT COLOGNE SOUTH CEMETERY.
UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS FATHER, JOHN. HE LEFT BROTHERS, HERBERT, WILLIAM, ALFRED AND HAROLD JOHNSON, AND SISTER, ETHELHUNTER.
HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5, PAGE 95.
