BORN HULL 1887. SON OF FRED & ELEANOR JANE JOHNSON, OF, 242 NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL.
HIS WIFE, ELSIE MATTHEWS, LIVED AT 4, SAVANNAH AVENUE, MINTON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A MOTORMAN FOR HULL CITY TRAMWAYS.
HE ENLISTED IN THE 13TH EYR HULL PALS IN NOVEMBER 1914. SERVED IN EGYPT. SEVERELY WOUNDED IN FRANCE IN AUGUST 1916 AND SPENT SIX MONTHS IN NAUNTON PARK HOSPITAL, CHELTENHAM. FROM THAT TIME HE SERVED AS A TRENCH MORTAR AND BOMBING INSTRUCTOR FOR THE 3RD EAST YORKSHIRES, AT WITHERNSEA.
IN AUGUST 1918 HE JOINED THE NORTH RUSSIA EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, AS A SERGEANT IN THE 3RD EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS HIT IN THE CHEST BY A BULLET, FIRED AT CLOSE RANGE. HE LIVED FOR AN HOUR AND DIED OF INTERNAL BLEEDING. HE DIED AT ARCHANGEL, ON 19/02/1919, AGED 32.
HE LEFT A WIDOW AND THREE CHILDREN. HIS YOUNGEST WAS BORN ON ARMISTICE DAY AND HE HAD NEVER SEEN.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 25TH APRIL 1919, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS ONLY BROTHER, PRIVATE, CLIFFORD HARDY JOHNSON, 20TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY HAD BEEN KILLED IN ACTION, ON 25/10/1918, AGED 19. THEY LEFT FIVE SISTERS, IN HULL.
