BORN HULL 09/07/1886. SON OF CHARLES CROSBY JOHNSTON (1861-1915) AND MARY JANE SOUTHWICK (1864-1901), OF 199 HESSLE ROAD, HULL. SHE DIED IN 1901. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. SON OF A BUTCHER, WORKING AT THE SHOP ON 199 HESSLE ROAD, HULL. HE EMIGRATED TO VANCOOVER, CANADA, WHERE HE ALSO WORKED AS A BUTCHER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 9.5 INCHES TALL, 34-38 INCH CHEST, 155 LBS WEIGHT, RUDDY COMPLEXION, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR, WESLEYAN RELIGION.

HE ENLISTED IN THE 16TH CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 23/09/1914. KILLED AT YPRES, ON 19/04/1916, AGED 29. COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, BELGIUM.

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, WILLIAM,  SERVED AS PRIVATE, 3797,  1/4 EYR, DURING WW1. DISCHARGED WITH TUBERULOSIS, ON 18/05/1916 (SILVER BADGE NO: 112155). HE DIED OF FLU, ON 14/04/1919, AGED 22 AND IS BURIED AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.

HIS FATHER, WAS LOST ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘SAPPHO’ ON 27/12/1915.
