Born Hull 18/02/1895. Son of Henry (Harry) Kay (1858-1928) and Sarah Ann Birch (1859-1940) of 7 Lucas square, New George Street, Hull. The fifth of ten children. He had five brothers and four sisters. Worked as an Oil Miller. Before the war, he played a few matches for Hull Kingston Rovers. Described as 5 foot, 6.5 inches tall, 159 lbs weight, 37-39 inch chest, “good” physical development
He enlisted in the “Hull Pals”, on 09/12/1914. Trained at Beverley and Ripon Camps. Served with the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment in Egypt and France. Admitted to hospital with a bayonet wound to the thigh, on 08/09/1916. Returned to unit on 30/09/1916. Killed in action at Serre on 13/11/1916, aged 22. Buried Euston Road, Cemetery. He had served in the army for one year and s41 days. His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail 31 March 1917. Unmarried. His army effects were left to his father, Harry.
He had two brothers serving in France. Gunner, Herbert Kay, and Driver, Charles Kay. Also two brother in Laws, Private, J. Irwin (killed) and Private, J.A. Smith (wounded four times).
