William Henry Lamb

BORN HULL 14/03/1897. SON OF HENRY LAMB (1862-1916) & MRS ADA DOWNES FREER (1872-1954), OF 11, ROWLANDS TERRACE, NORNABELL STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS ADDRESS) AND 7, CLARENCE AVENUE, NORNABELL STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

HE WAS A BARNARDO’S BOY, SENT TO CANADA, IN 1907 TO WORK AS FARM LABOURERS AND DOMESTIC SERVANTS. HE LIVED WITH THE CARR FAMILY, IN DUNDALK, ONTARIO.

HE ENLISTED AT OWEN SOUND, ONTARIO, ON 22ND JANUARY, 1916. SERVED WITH THE 147TH ONTARIO REGIMENT. DIED OF DEMENTIA PRECOX, ON 31/07/1916, AGED 19. HE IS BURIED AT VENTRY CEMETERY, ONTARIO, CANADA.

HE HAD HOPED TO REJOIN HIS MOTHER IN ENGLAND, BUT NEVER LEFT CANADIA SOIL. HE WAS ONE OF 677 BERNADO BOYS WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. (Almost 100% of male British Home Children enlisted in the C.E.F.; By April 7th, 1917 70% or 7,000 British Home Children had enlisted in the C.E.F.; Eventually, approximately 10,000 male British Home Children served in the C.E.F.)
