BORN HULL 1895. SON OF SOLOMAN (SHLOMO) LEVINE (1862-1920) & ANNIE (MINNIE) GOLDSTEINE (1867-1933), AT 39 MYTON STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS), 84 OSBORNE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 38, LOWER UNION STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WAS NAMED AFTER HIS PATERNAL GRANDFATHER, WHO HAILED FROM THE MINSK REGION, OF RUSSIA.

HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND FOUR SISTERS. EDUCATED AT OSBOURNE STREET SCHOOL, HULL. WORKED AS A FISH MERCHANT FOR HIS FATHER’S FISH SHOP.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, WITH HIS FRIEND HARRY FURMAN. SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON THE SOMME, 15/01/1917, AGED 21. HIS FRIEND HARRY FURMAN, LOST A LEG TRYING TO SAVE HIM AND DIED OF WOUNDS THE NEXT DAY, 16/01/1917, AGED 20. BOTH ARE BURIED AT BAZENTIN-LE-PETIT MILITARY CEMETERY. FOLLOWING THE FAMILY’S REQUEST OVER MANY YEARS, SIMON’S GRAVE STONE WAS FINALLY CHANGED TO A STAR OF DAVID, AFTER THE INTERVENTION OF HIS NAME SAKE GREAT NEPHEW, WHO HEADS A TOP GLOBAL LAW FIRM.

UNMARRIED. SIMON’S WAR PENSION WENT TO HIS MOTHER, AT 38 LOWER UNION STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE LEFT AN OLDER SISTER, ETTY, YOUNGER BROTHER JACOB (JACK) LEVINE AND YOUNGER SISTERS, LEAH, BETSEY AND GERTY. HE DID NOT MAKE A WILL. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HULL JEWISH COMMUNITY ROLL OF HONOUR.
