LOST AT SEA ON THE STEAM TRAWLER ‘HALCYON’. PRESUMED DROWNED, AGED 43. COMMEMORATED ON THE MERCHANT MARINE MEMORIAL, TOWER HILL, LONDON.
The steam Trawler, Halcyon, was built by Cochrane & Cooper, Ltd., Beverley in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by J. Leyman Jr. was a British trawler of 190 tons.
On February 19th, 1917, Halcyon was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-71 (Hugo Schmidt), off Butt of Lewis. 11 persons were lost.
