HE WORKED AS AN ASSISTANT COOK ON THE STEAM SHIP “WHITBY ABBEY”. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY.
HE MARRIED VIOLET JACOBSEN, AT HULL, IN 1915. HUSBAND OF VIOLET (LATER FORD), OF 55 MAYFIELD STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS), 36 PROVIDENCE TERRACE, WASSAND STREET, HULL AND 2, NILE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE WAS KILLED ON THE 1ST JULY 1916 AT THE SOMME, AGED 22. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFTTO HIS WIDOW, VIOLET. SHE MARRIED, DRIVER, GEORGE W. WOOD, RASC, ON 26/5/1917.
HE IS BURIED AT BRAY MILITARY CEMETERY, SOMME, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT – VIOLET”
