HE MARRIED ELLEN ELIZABETH NELSON (1883-1952), AT HULL IN 1900, HE WAS SKIPPER, OF THE TRAWLER ‘TUGELA’, LOST AT SEA, ON 26/06/1916, AGED 33. WELL KNOWN IN THE HESSLE ROAD AREA. HE LEFT £241 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, ELLEN, AT 124 FLINTON STREET, HULL. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WALKER STREET MEMORIAL HULL AND THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT. (HDM 28/06/1916 PHOTO)
HMT Tugela, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Hull in 1900 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 233 tons. On June 26th, 1916, HMT Tugela was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-1 (Kurt Ramien), off Lowestoft. 8 persons were lost.
