Maynard, Joseph Towse

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF WALKER MAYNARD (1858-1907) & EMMA NICHOLLS (1855-1931), OF 93, SOMERSCALES STREET, HULL, 4, BRIGHTON TERRACE, HOPWOOD STREET, HULL & 8, FERNDALE AVENUE, EDGECUMBE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. ALL THREE SONS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR.

HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A BILLIARD MARKER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 32305, 2ND SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 28/04/1917, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HE LOST BOTH BROTHERS IN THE WAR. LANCE CORPORAL, SYDNEY TOWSE MAYNARD, 8TH LONDON REGIMENT (POST OFFICE RIFLES), KILLED IN ACTION, ON 20/09/1917, AGED 32. ALSO, HIS OTHER BROTHER, STANLEY MAYNARD, WHO SERVED AS COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR, 10267, OF “A” COMPANY, 1ST BORDER REGIMENT. STANLEY WAS AWARDED THE FRENCH CROIX DE GUERRE (CDG), THE MILITARY MEDAL AND DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL FOR BRAVERY. HE WAS KILLED ON 15/10/1918, AGED JUST 22, A MONTH BEFORE THE WAR ENDED.
HE LEFT THREE SISTERS, ADA, BEATRICE AND LAURA AND A WIDOWED MOTHER, WHO HAD LOST ALL THREE SONS IN THE WAR. ALL THREE MAYNARD BOYS ARE COMMEMORATED TOGETHER AT ST JOHN WW1 MEMORIAL, NEWLAND, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL.
