BORN HULL 1891.HIS WIFE NELLIE MOVED TO 21 ARTHUR STREET, WITHERNSEA. SON OF GEORGE WILLIAM & CLARA McKEE. GEORGE WAS A FORMER BUS CONDUCTOR ON THE ANLABY ROAD ROUTE. HE HAD NOT BEEN MARRIED LONG. HIS BROTHER EDWARD McKEE WHO SERVED IN THE SAME REGIMENT AND BURIED HIS BROTHER, RECORDED THAT GEORGE WAS KILLED AT HIS POST, BY AN ENEMY RIFLE GRENADE WHICH LANDED IN HIS TRENCH. A PHOTOGRAPH OF GEORGE McKEE, WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 18/10/1915. HIS BROTHER’S LETTER, REGARDING HIS DEATH WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 19TH APRIL 1916 & THE 4TH MAY 1916. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, & IN THE HULL MINSTER BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE. ON HIS FAMILY GRAVE ARE THE WORDS, “HE DID HIS BIT FOR KING AND COUNTRY AND GAVE ALL HE HAD. HIS LIFE.”
L/CPL GEORGE MCKEE 12/991. Born in 1891, George was the eldest of two sons to George and Clara McKee of 31 Division Road, Hull. A Tram Conductor on the Anlaby Road route, he married Nellie Rutter and the couple lived at 7 Perth Street before the war. George enlisted on 6th October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He served in Egypt and arrived France on 8th March 1916. He was killed in action on 12th April 1916 near Colincamps and is buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 25 years old. George’s name also appears on the Withernsea War Memorial. His wife moved to 21 Arthur Street, Withernsea, after the war.
