BORN HULL 03/12/1898. SON KNOWLES METCALF & KATE VIOLET METCALFE, OF 30, BLACKFRIARGATE, QUEENS STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND THIS 7. WILLIAM TERRACE, SPYVEE STREET, HULL. YOUNGEST OF THREE BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. HIS FATHER WAS A HAWKER AND CONVICTED THIEF.
WILLIAM ATTENDED SALTHOUSE SCHOOL, HULL. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS UNTRUTHFUL AND LEADER OF A YOUNG GANG OF THIEVES. HE WAS CAUGHT STEALING ORANGES AND NUTS, AND SENT TO EAST MOOR COMMUNITY HOME SCHOOL, LEEDS, HE SPENT THE NEXT 5 YEARS THERE FOR BAD BEHAVIOUR. HIS REFORM RECORDS STATES THAT HE HAD BLACK HAIR, BLUE EYES, CUT SCAR ABOVE LEFT EYE. HIS ‘SENTENCE’ EXPIRED ON THE 4TH JUNE 1917. HE THEN ENLISTED IN LEEDS. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 17695, OF THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 12TH/13TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE DIED AS A PRISONER OF WAR, IN GERMANY, ON 09/11/1918, AGED 19. TWO DAYS BEFORE THE WAR ENDED. HE IS BURIED AT NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, KASSEL, HESSEN, GERMANY
