Nicholson, John Charles

BORN HULL 1895, SOUTHCOATES. SON OF JOHN WILLIM NICHOLSON (1870-1928) AND EDITH HESSEY (1874-1943), OF 15, VILLA TERRACE, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A GROCER’S ERRAND BOY (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED AT HULL. SERVED WITH THE 3RD BATTALION, COLDSTREAM GUARDS. KILLED AT ZILLEBEKE, ON 19/11/1914, AGED 19. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, YPRES.

HE WAS LISTED AS KILLED ON THE ALEXANDRA STREET SHRINE (HDM 23/10/1916).
HIS NAME IS ALSO LISTED ON ST MARY’S CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL, LOWGATE. RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNEY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 1.

HIS PHOTOGRAPH AND A LETTER HOME TO HIS FAMILY WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 26TH OCTOBER 1914. *

HIS BROTHER, WALTER NICHOLSON, WAS KILLED DURING THE ‘BLITZ’ ON HULL, ON 14/03/1941, AGED 42.
