Nicholson, William Greenwood

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF FREDERICK WILLIAM NICHOLSON (1867-1945) & SARAH EMMA GREENWOOD (1871-1965), OF 30, GRANVILLE STREET, ANLABY ROAD, HULL. (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 424, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A GOODS AND RAILWAY SIGNALMAN. ELDEST OF FIVE CHILDREN. A FORMER BOOKINGS CLERK AND EX BLUNDELL’S PAINT WORKER. 515 HESSLE ROAD, WAS HIS 1918 MILITARY VOTERS ADDRESS.

HE ENLISTED AS A GUNNER, IN HULL, ON 31/05/1915. JOINING THE LOCAL 2ND EAST RIDING ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS NEARLY 5 FOOT, 8 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, NORMAL VISION, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 06/01/1916. SERVED AS LANCE BOMBARDIER, WITH ‘O’ ANTI AIRCRAFT BATTERY. HE HAD RETURNED HOME TO ENGLAND FOR 2 WEEKS LEAVE BETWEEN THE 12TH -26TH AUGUST 1918. HE RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON 27/08/1918, AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, A WEEK LATER, ON 04/09/1918, AGED 25. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY, FOR 3 YEARS AND 97 DAYS.

HIS WAR PENSION WAS LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, AT 424, HESSLE ROAD, HULL.
HE IS BURIED AT LEBUCQUIERE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “IN HEAVEN ABOVE, WHERE ALL IS LOVE, DEAR SON WE HOPE TO MEET AGAIN”

HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
