BORN HULL 03/10/1890. SON OF ALFRED NUTBROWN (1869-1941) & JANE ELIZABETH (JENNY) NORTON (1870-1935), OF 57, STEPNEY LANE, HULL. ELDEST OF NINE CHILDREN. HIS FATHER WAS A COAL MAN AND FISH CARTER.

ALFRED MARRIED AT SCULCOATES, IN APRIL 1915. HIS WIFE, EDITH ROSA (BARRETT) LIVED AT 33, REDBOURNE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AT HOLMES TANNERY, SCULCOATES LANE.

HE ENLISTED IN SEPTEMBER 1916 AND SERVED AS PRIVATE, 32995, 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION AT ARRAS, SIX MONTHS LATER, ON 12/03/1917, AGED 26.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 27TH MARCH 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, EDITH. HE LEFT NO CHILDREN. (THEIR TWINS BOTH DIED IN 1915). HIS WIFE EDITH, REMARRIED IN 1918.

ALFRED NUTBROWN IS BURIED AT FAUBOURG D’AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS. HIS GRAVE READS, “HE ANSWERED HIS COUNTRY’S CALL AND STILL LIVES IN OUR MEMORIES”. ALFRED’S DEATH DEEPLY AFFECTED HIS FAMILY. THEY CONTINUED TO REMEMBER HIM IN OBITUARIES (HULL DAILY MAIL 14/03/1921).

HE IS COMMEMORATED AT ST MARYS CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.

HIS BROTHER, JAMES (JIM) NUTBROWN, SERVED AS A STOKER IN THE ROYAL NAVY AND LIVED AT 11 WASSAND STREET, HULL.
