Overton, Thomas.

Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL THOMAS OVERTON 11/787. Born 1896, the second of five children to William and Harriet Overton of 22 Withernsea Street, Hull. A Grocer’s Assistant by trade, he dropped everything when King and Country called no doubt puffed-up with patriotism and desperate for some adventure and glory. He queued at City Hall to enlist, joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 10th September 1914. After a year of training, in which he was disciplined twice, once for overstaying a pass and once for leaving the parade ground without permission, Thomas shipped for Egypt in December 1915 and then on to France the following March. The Somme was their destination. He saw out the main battle only to be killed in the day-to-day shelling and sniping which took a man here and a man there and did much to sap morale. Thomas was killed in action on 30th November 1916 and is buried at Sailly-au-Bois Military Cemetery; he was 20 years old.
