BORN ARMLEY, LEEDS, 1888. HULL PAL. LIVED IN HULL. SON OF JOHN & REBECCA PAGET, ARMLEY, LEEDS.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FREDERICK PAGET 12/1522. Born in 1888 Frederick was the eldest of two sons to John and Rebecca Paget of 11 Oriental Street, Wesley Road, Armley, Leeds. John Paget died in 1902 and Rebecca took lodgers to help keep the family in food and shelter. At some point after 1911 Frederick moved to Hull where he worked as a Carpet and Linoleum Fitter prior to the outbreak of war. He enlisted at City Hall early in 1915 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. On the night of 5th August 1916 the 12th battalion relieved the 10th moving into positions alongside their comrades in the 13th. Often the enemy was wise to these changeovers and would send speculative and sporadic bursts of heavy artillery into known lines of communication. The slightest noise could give you away, and as guns were always trained on such zig-zagged communication trenches, it was not hard to kill a lot of men with comparatively few shells when so many were packed into such a small space. It could well have been just such a circumstance which claimed the life of one more. Frederick Paget was killed in action on 6th August 1916 and is buried in St. Vaast Military Cemetery; he was 28 years old.
