Clarence Eric Plaxton, Royal Navy

BORN DUNSWELL, BEVERLEY, 29/12/1892. ONLY SON OF JOHN FRANCIS PLAXTON (1871-1924) AND ALICE WASTLING (1872-1905), OF WOODMANSEY.  HIS FATHER WAS A MARKET GARDENER IN THEARNE. HE HAD TWO YOUNGER BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS. CLARENCE PLAXTON WAS EMPLOYED BY MR F.G. HOBSON, OF BEVERLEY, ALSO AS A MARKET GARDENER.

HE ENLISTED AS A STOKER IN THE ROYAL NAVY, ON 19/08/1913. LOST ON HMS “INVINCIBLE”, AT AT JUTLAND, ON 31/05/1916, AGED 23. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE WOODMANSEY. THEARNE. BEVERLEY PARKS MEMORIAL and PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL HIS PHOTO AND DEATH WERE REPORTED IN THE BEVERLEY GUARDIAN. HE IS PICTURED IN THE HULL DAILYMAIL, ON 04/07/1916. *

The Battleship HMS Invincible participated in three major battles: the Battle of Heligoland Bight in August 1914, the Battle of the Falklands in December 1914, sinking the 2 armoured cruisers SMS Gneisenau and SMS Scharnhorst and in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, in which she sank. Goodwin Stuart 27/02/2011 Among those killed when HMS Invincible blew up and sunk was 16 year old Midshipman John D’Urban Scott (12/Feb/1900-31/May/1916), eldest son of Rear Admiral Sir Percy Moreton Scott GCB KCVO.
