BORN SHEFFIELD 1896. SON OF HENRY & CHARLOTTE, OF 11 GLADSTONE TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL .
The SS CARLO had two lucky escapes during 1916 when on 1 October and 9 November she was intercepted by German submarines and shelled. On each occasion she fought back with her poop gun to such good effect that the attacker broke off the engagement. One year later the vessel was not so fortunate as she was torpedoed and sunk on 13 November 1917 by U-95 seven miles south by west from Coningbeg LightVessel. She was on passage from Cartagena to Liverpool with a general cargo. Two of her crew was lost in the attack. ref. used: [1] http://www.shipsnostalgia.com [2] Stuart Smith Allen Tony 13/11/2013 CARLO Ss, a 1,937 grt defensively armed merchant steamer was torpedoed without warning by a submarine on 13/11/1917, 7 miles S by W from Coningbeg Light Vessel. 2 lives were lost.
