William Allon (13/1273) was one of the original Hull Pals. He was one of seven children born to Stephen and Sarah Allon, of 115 Waterloo Street, Hull. Fortunately, his service record still exists and from that we know he was 20 years and 3 months old when he enlisted at Hull City Hall on 25 January 1915. He was 5ft 2″ tall and his occupation is listed as Labourer.
He married Bertha Louise May Fewster at St Stephens Church on 24 October 1915. The couple had no children. The only blemish on his record, was an admonishment for overstaying his leave, by a day on 25 October 1915. Perhaps the decision to marry was a last minute one? Bertha remarried during the first three months of 1919. Her husband was Thomas Davison and their address is given as 7 Scarborough Terrace, Kent Street , Hull.
William served with the 13th EYR on their time in Egypt between 15/12/1915 and 07/03/1915. The regiment then moved to France and sadly William was killed in action on 13 November 1916. His body was never recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
