HE MARRIED, KATE BURNHAM (1882-1965), AT SCULCOATES, HULL IN 1899. THEY LIVED AT 47 HESSLE ROAD AND 4, FLINTON GROVE, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL.
SERVED WITH DISTINCTION IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS (DSC), ON 10/09/1915, FOR SERVICES IN THE DARDENELLES. HE WAS SKIPPER OF THE TRAWLER ‘GAMBRI’, WHICH STRUCK A MINE IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, ON THE 18/01/1918, WITH THE LOSS OF 21 CREW. HE WAS AGED 47.
HE LEFT £372 IN HIS WILL, TO HIS HIS WIDOW, KATE, WHO MOVED TO 47 HESSLE ROAD. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. ALSO LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HMT Gambri, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1916 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 274 tons.
On January 18th, 1918, HMT Gambri was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-71 (Ernst Steindorff), 3/4 miles off the Royal Sovereign light vessel. 21 persons were lost.
