Simpson, George

BORN HULL 1895. SON OF MRS JANE SIMPSON, OF 47, BLACKFRIARGATE, HULL. HIS MOTHER WAS A WELL KNOWN FIGURE, SELLING NEWSPAPERS AT THE CORNER OF SCALE LANE HULL FOR OVER 30 YEARS. A WIDOW, SHE HAD NINE CHILDREN ALL OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY, APART FROM GEORGE AND ANOTHER SON.

GEORGE SIMPSON WAS A FORMER HULL TRAMWAY DRIVER ON THE SPRING BANK ROUTE.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, 1896. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 203481 EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/06/1917. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 19/07/1917 AND 28/07/1917. *

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MARY’S CHURCH LOWGATE MEMORIAL & THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY. MEMORIAL AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH.

HE LEFT A WIDOW, MARY  (BORN 15/12/1916) & TWO CHILDREN (GEORGE EDWARD AND EDNA MAY), AT 8, SHIRLEY AVENUE, PERTH STREET, HULL. SHE REMARRIED AND BECAME MARY MITCHISON.

HIS MOTHER, WHO LIVED AT 47 BLACKFRIAR GATE, HULL, DIED ON ARMISTICE DAY 11/11/1920, AGED 62.
