BORN HULL 1883. SON OF WILLIAM STARK & MARY ANN SMITH, OF 17 ROSEDALE AVENUE, UPTON STREET, HULL AND 17, DERBY AVENUE, BRIGHT STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS)AND 4 LOWBOTTOMS, MAXWELL STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS, WILLIAM, WALTER AND HERBERT.

HE WAS A ROTARY KILN BURNER, DESCRIBED AS  5 FOOT, 3.5 INCHES TALL, 120 LBS WEIGHT, 34-36 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.

HE MARRIED ANNIE MACE, AT WILMINGTON, HULL, ON 25TH DECEMEBER 1904.  THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN (ARTHUR, EDITH AND HERBERT) AND LIVED AT 17 ROSEDALE AVENUE, UPTON STREET, HULL. (1911 CENSUS). HIS WIFE WAS SENTENDED TO TWO MONTHS IMPRISONMENT ON 7TH JUNE 1915, FOR NEGLECTING HER CHILDREN.  THE NSPCC MOVED THE CHILDREN TO HIS SISTER IN LAW, MRS  LIZ ALLAN, AT .12, DENMARK AVENUE, DENMARK STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION RECORDS ).

HE ENLISTED AT WARRINGTON, ON 2ND SEPTEMBER 1914. TRAINED AT TIDWORTH. SERVED AS PRIVATE AND THEN CORPORAL IN THE 7TH SOUTH LANCS REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 17TH JULY 1915. APPOINTED TO LANCE SERGEANT, ON 16TH MARCH 1916. RETURNED HOME ON 9TH JULY 1916 (GUNSHOT WOUND TO LEFT ELBOW). POSTED TO FRANCE AGAIN ON 3RD MARCH 1917. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/09/1917, AGED 34.

HE WAS COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 3 YEARS AND 22 DAYS.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ON ST MARYS CHURCH, LOWGATE, ROLL OF HONOUR, WITH HIS BROTHER, HERBERT STARK, LOST ON HMS “QUEEN MARY”, 31/05/1916, AGED 22.
