Stride, George

BORN HULL 31/10/1876. SON OF GEORGE AND SARAH ANN STRIDE. A SEAMAN, WITH HIS BROTHERS, WALTER AND THOMAS. HE MARRIED IN 1901. HIS WIFE, SARAH ANN POTTER (1881-1953), LIVED AT 2 HOPE TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).  HE HAD 5 CHILDREN. SERVED ON THE TRAWLER, “SPEETON”. LOST AT SEA, ON 31/12/1915, AGED 39. TWO DAUGHTERS, IVY AND JANE, WERE ADMITTED TO THE HULL SEAMAN’S ORPHANAGE, ON 20/03/1917.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S TRINITY HOUSE WW1 MEMORIAL.HE IS  COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT, UK.

HMT Speeton, built by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby in 1913 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 205 tons. On December 31st, 1915, HMT Speeton was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-7 (Georg Haag), off Lowestoft. 11 persons were lost. They included:-
