BORN KIRTON LINDSEY, LINCS, 1886 BUT RESIDENT IN HULL. SON OF LATE JAMES SUMMERLAND (1839-1911) & HARRIET WHITAKER (1843-1922), OF 59, CAVE STREET, HULL. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE ISTERS.

MARRIED AT SCULCOATES, HULL, ON 9TH MARCH 1913. HUSBAND OF KATE EVA EPTON (1889-1959), OF 2, CORNWALL GARDENS, RAGLAN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD TWO DAUGHTERS, ENID AND NOREEN. HE WORKED AS A POSTMAN (1911 CENSUS) AND LABOURER.

DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8.5 INCHES TALL, 133 LBS WEIGHT, 36-38 INCH CHEST, TATTOOS ON RIGHT ARM AND HAND, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.

HE ENLISTED ON 14/11/1914. TRAINED AT BEVERLEY & RIPON. SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EYR. TRANSFERRED TO THE MACHINE GUN CORPS, ON 08/04/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 30/08/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 7TH EYR. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 22/03/1918, AGED 32. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 3 YEARS AND 119 DAYS.

COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, KATE.
