BORN HULL 17/03/1896. SECOND SON OF ROBERT URWIN THACKERY (1858-1935) & KATE ATKINSON (1866-1940), OF 58, BRIGHT STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. SON OF A WOOD SAWYER. HE JOINED HULL’S RECKITTS FACTORY, ON 01/12/1910, WHERE HE WORKED AS A WOOD SAWYER’S HELPER AND BOX MAKER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 2454, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 17/04/1915. SERVED AT ST JULIAN BATTLE AND DEFENCE OF THE YPRES CANAL. TRANSFERRED TO THE SOMME IN 1916. WOUNDED AT BEAUMONT HAMEL. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 28/11/1916, AGED 20.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, KATE.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S ST MARKS STREET MEMORIAL & THE SCULCOATES LANE MEMORIAL. HIS NAME IS ALSO RECORDED ON THE RECKITTS WW1 BOYS CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR, HULL.
HE IS BURIED AT BECOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE GAVE HIS LIFE THAT WE MIGHT LIVE”
