BORN HULL 1895. SECOND SON OF CHARLES TOWNLEY (1857-1920) & ADA TOWNLEY (1860-1943), OF 96, GOULTON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HIS FATHER WAS A BOILERMAKER. BERNARD WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 2/5TH NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 27/09/1917, AGED 22. HIS WAS UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS FATHER, CHARLES TOWNLEY. BURIED AT LANG MARK CEMETERY, BELGIUM.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, GEORGE HENRY TOWNLEY, SERVED WITH KING’S OWN ROYAL LANCASTER REGIMENT. WAS DISCHARGED ON 24/09/1917 AND AWARDED THE SILVER WOUND BADGE. HE DIED IN HULL, ON 03/11/1924, AGED 32.
