SS Henry R. James, built by J. L. Thompson & Sons, Ltd., Sunderland in 1909 and owned at the time of her loss by Henry R. James SS. Co. Ltd. (H. R. James & Sons), Bristol, was a British steamer of 3146 tons. On July 16th, 1917, Henry R. James, on a voyage from Bilbao via Brest to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore, was sunk by the German submarine UC-48 (Kurt Ramien), 10 miles ExN from Île de Batz, Brittany. 24 persons were lost.
