Wade, Sydney

BORN HEDON 1891. SON OF FRED & HELEN WADE. HE MARRIED IN JULY 1914. HIS WIFE AMY LIVED IN HORNSEA AND 19 LANDSDOWNE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). PRIOR TO WAR HE WAS A NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY JOINER IN HULL. HE WAS A WELL KNOWN AMATEUR FOOTBALLER AND CRICKETER.

HE HAD SERVED IN THE 5TH EAST YORKSHIRE CYCLISTS FOR FOUR YEARS AS A TERRITORIAL. TRANSFERRED TO THE 17TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS (THE RAILWAY PALS) WHICH WAS FORMED AT KING GEORGE DOCK, HULL PROMOTED TO CORPORAL. PART OF THE MACHINE GUN SECTION. HE WAS SHOT IN THE ARM AND CHEST AND DIED OF WOUNDS. ON 05/02/1916, AGED 26. HIS OFFICER DESCRIBED HIM TO HIS WIFE AS “ONE OF THE FINEST CHARACTERS I HAVE KNOWN AND IT HAS BEEN AN HONOUR TO HAVE SUCH A MAN SERVE WITH ME.”

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 17TH FEBRUARY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME, AT AUTHUILE MILITARY CEMETERY, AUTHUILLE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”.
